How to settle up: anyone marked "owes" pays that amount into the shared pot (or directly to whoever covered the costs); anyone marked "gets back" is reimbursed from the pot. Balances are rounded to the nearest cent, so a total may be off by a penny.
How to use this calculator
First, enter the total trip cost — the sum of everything the group spent, including flights, accommodation, the rental car, meals, and activities. Then set the number of travelers; a row appears for each person. Type each traveler's name and the amount they already paid (a deposit on the hotel, the flight they booked for everyone, and so on). Leave the amount at $0 for anyone who hasn't paid anything yet.
Results update instantly as you type. The fair share per person appears at the top, followed by a per-traveler table and a "who owes whom" list you can read out at the end of the trip. If someone joins or drops out, just change the traveler count — the rows rebuild automatically and keep the names and amounts you already entered.
How it works
The model is a straight equal split. Fair share = total trip cost ÷ number of travelers. For each person, balance = fair share − amount already paid. A positive balance means that traveler still owes money toward the shared pot; a negative balance means they overpaid and should get money back. Add up all the balances and they always equal zero (within a penny of rounding), because every dollar of the total is accounted for exactly once.
Assumptions: every traveler is responsible for an equal share of the total — this tool does not weight shares by room size, days attended, or personal extras. It also doesn't optimize the minimum number of transfers (like "A pays B, B pays C"); it shows each person's net position, and your group can combine those into the fewest payments. Frequently asked questions
How do you split trip costs fairly between friends?
Divide the total trip cost by the number of travelers to get everyone's fair share. Then subtract what each person already paid (hotel deposits, flights, rental cars) from their fair share. A positive result is what they still owe; a negative result is what they should get back. The calculator above does this automatically.
What if one person paid for everything on the trip?
Put their total spending in the prepaid column under their name and $0 for everyone else. Their balance will be negative — that's how much the group owes them back. Everyone else's balance is what each person owes toward reimbursing them.
What if the prepaid amounts add up to more than the total cost?
That means the group overpaid relative to the total you entered — usually because a tip, deposit, or estimate was counted twice. The math still works: balances with a negative sign show who should be reimbursed. Double-check the total trip cost first, since it is the most common source of this mismatch.
Does this trip cost splitter handle unequal shares?
No. This calculator assumes every traveler owes an equal fair share of the total cost, which fits most group trips. If some travelers only joined for part of the trip or had pricier extras, adjust their prepaid amounts up or down first to approximate their true share, or agree on the split in person and use this tool to track the payments.
Is my payment information stored anywhere?
No. This is a splitter for trip expenses, not a payment tool — it never asks for bank or card details, and all calculations happen in your browser. Your numbers are never sent to or stored on our servers.
