These totals are estimates for planning — prices change with season, destination, and booking timing. Add a 10–15% buffer for surprises.

How to use this calculator

Start with the trip basics: how many days you'll be away and how many travelers are going. Then fill in what you already know — maybe you've priced the flights and hotels — and estimate the rest. Every field updates the results instantly as you type, so you can try "what if we stay one more night?" or "what if we eat out every meal?" and watch the totals change.

Use the daily average to compare trips or destinations, and the per-person figure to split costs fairly. When the breakdown shows one category eating most of your budget, that's your sign of where to shop around first.

How it works

Each line item is priced its own way, then everything is added up:

  • Flights, activities, local transport, and shopping are flat totals you enter — usually priced once per trip.
  • Hotel = nightly rate × number of nights. Nights are separate from trip days because you might stay with family for part of a trip, or arrive and leave the same day.
  • Food = daily food budget per person × trip days × travelers. Food scales with both trip length and party size, which is why small changes here move the total a lot.
  • Grand total = the sum of all six categories.
  • Daily average = grand total ÷ trip days. Per person = grand total ÷ travelers. Per person per day = per-person cost ÷ trip days.

Every category's share is shown as a percentage of the grand total so you can see exactly where your money goes. All calculations happen in your browser and your numbers are never stored.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I budget per day for a trip?

It depends on the destination and your travel style, but a practical method is to list your fixed costs (flights, hotels) and add your expected daily spending on food, transport, and activities. Many travelers land between $100–$250 per person per day for mid-range trips, with budget trips under $100 and luxury trips well above. This calculator turns your daily estimate into a full-trip total so you can see if it fits your savings.

How do I save up for a vacation?

Once you have a total from this calculator, divide it by the number of months until your trip to get a monthly savings target. Set up an automatic transfer to a separate savings account so the money is set aside before you can spend it. If you're still short, trim the biggest flexible line items first, such as hotels and food.

Should I include travel insurance in my budget?

Usually, yes — travel insurance typically costs 4–10% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip cost, which is cheap peace of mind for international or expensive trips. Add it to the "shopping & other" line in this calculator so your total reflects the true cost of going.

How do I split costs between travelers?

The simplest approach is to split shared costs (hotel, car rental, activities) evenly and have each person cover their own variable spending (food, souvenirs). This calculator's per-person figure gives you a baseline number for an even split. Agree up front on which expenses are shared so nobody is surprised.

Is food really the biggest variable?

Usually not — lodging is typically the biggest line item on most trips, especially for longer stays, followed by food. Food spending does vary a lot day to day, since one fancy dinner can cost more than three casual meals. Getting the hotel right and choosing a realistic daily food budget are the two highest-leverage parts of your estimate.
