How to use this calculator

How it works
The math is straightforward. First the calculator picks the tip base: by default that's just your subtotal, because the usual US convention is to tip on the pre-tax amount. If you turn on the toggle, the tip base becomes subtotal + tax.
From there: tip = tip base × tip percent, total bill = subtotal + tax + tip, each person pays = total ÷ number of people, and tip per person = tip ÷ number of people. All dollar figures are rounded to the nearest cent; splitting a bill evenly can leave a cent or two of rounding difference in real life.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the standard range for sit-down restaurant service — 15% for adequate service and 20% (or more) for great service. Buffets and counter service typically call for less, around 10%. These are general customs, not rules.
Do you tip on the tax?
The usual convention in the US is to calculate the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, not on the total that includes sales tax. This calculator defaults to pre-tax tipping; if you would rather tip on the bill including tax, turn on the “tip on total including tax” toggle.
How do I split the bill evenly?
Enter your bill subtotal, tax, tip percentage, and the number of people. The calculator adds everything up — subtotal + tax + tip — and divides the total by the number of people, so each person pays the same share. It also shows each person's share of the tip.
What is a good tip for food delivery?
As general guidance, 10–20% of the food subtotal is common for restaurant delivery, with a few dollars as a minimum on small orders so the driver is fairly compensated for the trip. Bad weather, long distances, or large, heavy orders are often tipped a bit more.
Should I tip on alcohol?
Yes — when drinks are part of a bar or restaurant bill, the standard custom is to tip the same percentage on the drink total as on the food. Many people tip a dollar or two per drink at the bar for simple pours, and a full percentage on a restaurant tab.
