How to use this calculator

Enter what you charge to the card each month, the card's earn rate (for example 2 points per dollar), and what you believe each point is worth in cents. Then enter the card's annual fee. The calculator instantly shows your points per year, their estimated dollar value, the net value after the fee, and the monthly spend you need to break even.

If the net value is positive, the card is earning you more than it costs at your spending level. If it is negative, you are paying more in fees than you get back — consider a no-fee card or shifting spend to a card you already have.

How it works

The math is simple: annual rewards value = monthly spend × points per dollar × 12 months × point value. Subtract the annual fee to get the net value. The break-even monthly spend is the fee divided by your effective cash-back rate (points per dollar × point value), spread over 12 months — spend at least that much and the fee pays for itself.

The biggest uncertainty is the point value: a point is worth more when transferred to airline partners or redeemed for premium travel, and less when redeemed for statement credit. That is why point value is labeled as a user-adjustable estimate — plug in your own number based on how you actually redeem. This page evaluates a rewards card or program's annual value from your ongoing spending, which is different from our hotel points vs cash page that compares a single redemption (points vs cash for one stay).

Frequently asked questions

What does the travel rewards value calculator tell me?

It estimates the annual dollar value of the points a travel rewards credit card earns from your spending, subtracts the annual fee, and gives a net-value verdict: whether the card pays for itself at your spending level.

How do I know what my points are worth in cents?

Point values are estimates and vary by program and how you redeem. Check published valuations (many sources peg common bank points around 1 to 2 cents each) or enter your own based on how you plan to redeem; this calculator lets you adjust the value.

What is the break-even spend for a travel rewards card?

The monthly spend at which the rewards you earn equal the annual fee. Spend above that and the card is likely worth it; below it, the fee eats your gains. The calculator shows this number for your exact inputs.

How is this different from a hotel points vs cash calculator?

That tool compares a single redemption (points vs cash for one stay). This calculator evaluates a rewards card or program over a full year: total points earned from your spending, their estimated value, and the net result after the annual fee.

Should I count sign-up bonuses?

Sign-up bonuses can be huge in year one, but they do not repeat. This calculator shows the card's everyday value without the bonus, so you know whether it is worth keeping after the first year.
