Cat Lifespan Estimator

How long will your cat live? This free cat lifespan estimator starts from the average lifespan for your cat's lifestyle — indoor, indoor/outdoor, or outdoor — and adjusts for the care factors research links to longer or shorter lives.

All figures are estimates from population averages and published research, not a prediction for any individual cat. Lifestyle effects are simplified into fixed adjustments — real biology is more gradual.

How to use this calculator

Choose your cat's lifestyle, enter their current age if you know it, and check the care boxes that apply. The estimate updates instantly. Switching between "Indoor" and "Outdoor" shows just how much environment matters.

Example: a 3-year-old neutered indoor cat at a healthy weight gets 15 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 16.0 estimated years, a realistic range of 13.5–18.5 years, and about 13 estimated years remaining.

How it works

Base lifespan by lifestyle: Indoor 15 years, Indoor/outdoor 12 years, Outdoor 8.5 years. Lifestyle is the biggest predictor of cat longevity — traffic, fights, predators, and disease cut outdoor averages nearly in half.

Adjustments: spayed/neutered +0.5 yrs, ideal weight +0.5 yrs, overweight −1 yr, regular vet care +0.5 yrs. Estimated lifespan = base + all adjustments. The realistic range is ±2.5 years around the estimate. Estimated remaining = max(0, estimate − current age).

These adjustments are honest simplifications of published findings — the fixed-cat and lean-weight advantages are real, but the exact values vary by study. Treat the output as a planning guide, not a medical prognosis.

Frequently asked questions

How long do indoor cats live?

Indoor cats average around 15 years, and many reach 18-20 or more. Keeping a cat indoors removes the biggest early-life risks - traffic, fights, predators, and infectious disease - which is why indoor cats typically outlive outdoor cats by several years.

Why do outdoor cats live shorter lives?

Outdoor cats face traffic accidents, predators, fights with other animals, parasites, and infectious diseases like FeLV and FIV. Those risks pull the outdoor average down to roughly 8.5 years, nearly half the indoor average.

Do spayed or neutered cats live longer?

Yes, modestly. Fixed cats roam less, fight less, and avoid reproductive cancers, which studies link to a lifespan advantage of roughly half a year. This calculator adds 0.5 years for spayed or neutered cats as a simplified estimate.

Is this the same as a cat age calculator?

No. A cat age calculator converts your cat's current age into human years. This estimator predicts total expected lifespan from lifestyle and care factors, then subtracts the current age to estimate the years remaining.

Why is the result only an estimate?

Genetics, breed, accidents, and illness cannot be captured in a few inputs. Use the result as a planning guide - the plus-or-minus 2.5-year range shows how wide the real variation around the average is.
