How it works
Cats mature much faster than humans early on: a one-year-old cat is developmentally more like a teenager than a toddler. That's why the old "one cat year equals seven human years" rule is so misleading.
This calculator uses the widely used veterinary formula, often summarized as 15 / 9 / +4:
- First year (0–12 months): 15 human years. A 1-year-old cat ≈ 15 human years.
- Second year (12–24 months): 9 more human years. A 2-year-old cat ≈ 24 human years.
- Every year after: about 4 human years each. A 5-year-old cat ≈ 15 + 9 + (3 × 4) = 36 human years.
The formula reflects real biology: cats complete most of their growth, sexual maturity, and physical development in the first two years, so those years count far more heavily. After age 2, aging settles into a steadier pace. The result is an estimate, not a medical measurement — individual cats vary with breed, weight, diet, and indoor vs. outdoor lifestyle.

How do you convert cat years to human years?
Veterinarians use the 15/9/+4 formula: the first year of a cat's life equals 15 human years, the second year adds 9 (for a total of 24), and every year after that adds about 4 human years. So a 5-year-old cat is roughly 36 in human years (15 + 9 + 3 × 4). The calculator above applies this formula automatically using the cat's age in months for a more precise result.
Why do cats age faster in their first two years?
Cats reach sexual maturity, full adult size, and nearly complete physical development within their first year — the equivalent of a human going from newborn to late teens. The second year completes the transition to full adulthood, reaching the human equivalent of the mid-twenties. After that, aging slows to about 4 human years per cat year.
When is a cat considered senior?
Most veterinarians consider a cat senior at around 11 years of age (about 60 human years). Senior cats benefit from twice-yearly vet checkups, weight monitoring, and sometimes a diet formulated for older cats. Cats 15 and older are often called geriatric.
Do indoor cats live longer than outdoor cats?
