How to use this calculator

Measure your waist and hips with a tape measure, pick your units and sex, and read off your ratio and health band.

Enter your waist and hip circumferences โ€” both must use the same unit, so pick inches or centimeters above. Select your sex, since the health bands differ, then read off your ratio and band.

For example, a 32-inch waist and 40-inch hips gives 32 รท 40 = 0.80, which sits below both the women's (0.85) and men's (0.90) cutoffs.

How it works

WHR is simply waist circumference divided by hip circumference. Because it is a ratio, the unit cancels out โ€” inches and centimeters give the same answer as long as both measurements match.

WHO guidance flags a WHR above 0.90 for men and above 0.85 for women as a higher-risk band for obesity-related conditions. This page presents those bands as general information, not a diagnosis. This calculator is informational only and is not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy waist-to-hip ratio?

WHO guidance flags above 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women as higher risk; below those cutoffs is considered a lower-risk band.

Where do I measure my waist and hips?

Measure your waist at the narrowest point (or navel level), and your hips at the widest point of the buttocks. Keep the tape snug but not tight, and measure over light clothing.

Is WHR better than BMI?

It captures fat distribution, which BMI misses - many clinicians use both together. WHR reflects where fat sits; BMI reflects overall mass.

Is this calculator medical advice?

No. This is an informational screening number only, not medical advice. Talk to a clinician about what your WHR means for your health.
