How Many Steps Are in a Mile

Wondering how many steps are in a mile? It depends on your stride: enter your step count below and use either your measured stride or your height to estimate it, and this free converter will show your distance in miles, kilometers, and feet — plus exactly how many steps make a mile at your stride.

How to use this calculator

Enter the number of steps from your pedometer, fitness tracker, or phone — the default of 10,000 represents the popular daily goal. Then tell the calculator your stride length. If you have measured it, choose "Enter stride directly" and type it in feet and inches. If not, choose "Estimate from height" and enter your height; the tool estimates your stride as height × 0.413.

Results update instantly as you type. The big number shows your distance in miles, and the table breaks it down into kilometers and feet. The "steps per mile" row answers the classic question directly: at your stride, how many steps does one mile take?

How it works

The math is simple: there are 5,280 feet in a mile, so miles = steps × stride (in feet) ÷ 5,280. Kilometers come from the same total multiplied by 0.3048 meters per foot and divided by 1,000. The reverse — steps per mile = 5,280 ÷ stride (in feet) — tells you how many of your steps fill a mile.

Why your stride matters: stride length varies with height, leg length, age, and walking speed. The common rule of thumb that "a mile is about 2,000 steps" assumes a 2.5-foot stride (5,280 ÷ 2.5 = 2,112 steps per mile, rounded down for simplicity). That is a fine estimate for an average adult, but taller people with 3-foot strides need only about 1,760 steps per mile, while a 2-foot stride needs 2,640. Height-based estimates are approximate — for the most accurate distance, measure your actual stride over 10 steps.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile?

About 2,000 steps make a mile for an average adult with a 2.5-foot stride (5,280 feet / 2.5 = 2,112 steps). Taller people with longer strides need fewer steps, shorter people need more — enter your own stride above for your personal number.

How do I measure my stride length?

Walk 10 normal steps, measure the total distance in feet, and divide by 10. If you don't have a tape measure, use the estimate-from-height mode above: stride is roughly your height in inches times 0.413. For example, a 5'6" person has an estimated stride of about 27 inches (2.27 feet).

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

At an average 2.5-foot stride, 10,000 steps is about 4.73 miles (10,000 x 2.5 / 5,280). With a longer 3-foot stride it becomes about 5.68 miles, so the common 10,000-step goal usually lands between 4.5 and 5.5 miles.

Are stride length and step length the same thing?

Technically, a stride is two steps (the distance covered from one foot strike to the next strike of the same foot), but most step counters and converters — including this one — use stride to mean the distance of a single step. What matters is that the number you enter is the distance of one step.

How many steps should I walk per day?

The popular 10,000-step goal is roughly 4.5 to 5 miles per day, but research suggests health benefits level off well before that — many adults benefit greatly from 7,000 to 8,000 steps daily. Use this calculator to translate your step goal into miles and plan walks that fit your schedule.
