Standard Drinks Calculator

Not every pour is one drink — a 12 oz craft beer and a 5 oz glass of wine can carry very different amounts of alcohol. This calculator converts any volume and ABV into US standard drinks (14 grams of pure alcohol each).

How to use this calculator

Tap a preset (beer, wine, shot) or enter your own volume and ABV. The standard drink count updates instantly.

The classic reference pours each land at about 1.0 standard drink: 12 oz of 5% beer, 5 oz of 12% wine, and 1.5 oz of 40% spirits all contain roughly 14 grams of pure alcohol. But a 12 oz craft beer at 8% ABV is about 1.6 standard drinks — volume alone never tells the whole story.

How it works

Pure alcohol (g) = volume (fl oz) × ABV × 0.23335, where 0.23335 = 29.5735 (mL per fl oz) × 0.789 (alcohol density g/mL) ÷ 100. Standard drinks = grams ÷ 14, since one US standard drink holds 14 g of pure alcohol.

This is an educational estimate for understanding drink sizes, not medical guidance. Actual alcohol content varies by brand and pour.

Frequently asked questions

What is a standard drink?

In the US, one standard drink contains 14 grams of pure alcohol - about 12 oz of 5% beer, 5 oz of 12% wine, or 1.5 oz of 40% spirits.

Is a 12 oz beer always one standard drink?

Only at 5% ABV. A 12 oz craft beer at 8% is about 1.6 standard drinks. Volume alone does not tell you the alcohol content.

How do you calculate standard drinks from ABV?

Multiply the volume in fluid ounces by the ABV and by 0.23335 to get grams of pure alcohol, then divide by 14. So a 5 oz glass of 12% wine is 5 x 12 x 0.23335 = 14 g, or one standard drink.

Is this a medical tool?

No. This is an educational tool for understanding drink sizes. It does not give health or medical advice and cannot tell you how alcohol will affect you.
