How to use this calculator
Choose the room type and enter the room's length and width in feet. The calculator applies the standard designer rules for that room — front furniture legs on the rug in living rooms, 24+ inches past the bed in bedrooms, chair clearance in dining rooms — and snaps the result to the nearest standard rug size.
Treat the recommendation as a starting point: if you are between sizes, designers almost always say go bigger.
How it works
Living room: rug = room minus 3 ft each way (leaving ~18 inches of bare floor per side). Bedroom: rug = room minus 2 ft, positioned to extend past the bed. Dining: rug = room minus 2 ft, with the note that chairs need 24 inches behind the table. The ideal size is then matched to the nearest of the standard sizes 4×6, 5×7, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12, and 10×14 by area.
Frequently asked questions
How much bare floor should show around a rug?
Leave 18-24 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall in living rooms. In small rooms 12 inches is acceptable; in large rooms you can go wider.
Should a rug go under the bed?
Yes — extend it at least 24 inches beyond the sides and foot of the bed so your feet land on rug, not cold floor. For a queen bed that usually means an 8x10 rug.
What size rug goes under a dining table?
The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. For a 6-person table that is typically 8x10 or larger.
Are round rugs a good idea?
Round rugs work well under round tables and in entryways. Size them so furniture legs sit fully on the rug, the same as rectangular rugs.
Can a rug be too big for a room?
Yes — a rug that touches the walls on all sides reads as wall-to-wall carpet and shrinks the room visually. Keep that 18-inch border of floor showing.
