Random Name Picker

Quick answer: Paste your names, choose how many to draw, and the picker selects winners instantly using your browser's cryptographic random generator. For example, drawing 2 from Alice, Bob, Carol, Dave, Eve might return Carol and Eve — every draw is different.

Pick random winners, assign teams, or choose a volunteer — paste one name per line, set how many winners to draw, and get a fair result instantly. Your list never leaves your browser.

How to use this picker

Replace the sample names with your own (one per line), choose how many winners to draw, and press "Draw again" for a fresh result. Every draw reshuffles the list. If you need more winners than names, tick "Allow duplicates" — otherwise the tool shows an error.

How it works

Names are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by crypto.getRandomValues (your browser's cryptographic RNG), then the first N are taken. No repeats unless you enable duplicates. Nothing is sent anywhere — it all runs locally.

Worked example

Input: Alice, Bob, Carol, Dave, Eve — draw 2. One illustrative draw: Carol and Eve. This is one illustrative draw only; real output is random and differs every time.

Reference data

This page relies on no external dataset — randomness comes from the browser's built-in crypto API (crypto.getRandomValues), not from a table or server.

Method & sources

The picker runs the Fisher–Yates shuffle: starting from the last name, each position is swapped with a randomly chosen earlier-or-equal position, using a fresh cryptographic random value for every swap. Because each swap draws from a shrinking pool, every ordering of the list is equally likely, so every name has exactly the same chance of being drawn.

Frequently asked questions

Is the picker truly random?

It uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator — the same quality of randomness used for security tokens.

Can the same name win twice?

Not by default. Enable “allow duplicates” if you want sampling with replacement.

Is my list uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser; your names never leave your device.

Can I weight certain names?

No — every name has an equal chance on each draw.
