How to use this calculator
Measure the play area in feet and choose a depth in inches โ 6 inches is a common minimum for backyard equipment. The calculator converts to cubic feet, then to cubic yards (for bulk orders) and to 0.8 cu ft bags (the standard store size).
Rubber mulch settles very little compared with wood, so no extra settling allowance is added โ but rounding bag counts up is already handled.
How it works
Volume = length ร width ร (depth รท 12) in cubic feet. Cubic yards = cubic feet รท 27. Bags = cubic feet รท 0.8, rounded up. A 6-inch depth over a 20 ร 15 ft area, for example, is 150 cu ft โ about 5.6 cubic yards or 188 bags.
Fall protection depends on equipment height as well as depth. Check your swing set or playset manual for its rated fall height and required surfacing depth.
Frequently asked questions
How deep should rubber mulch be under a playground?
A common minimum is 6 inches of loose-fill rubber mulch for backyard equipment up to about 6 feet tall. Always follow your specific equipment manufacturer's fall-height rating.
How is rubber mulch different from wood mulch for playgrounds?
Rubber mulch does not decompose, splinter, or attract insects the way wood mulch does, and it keeps its cushioning longer. It costs more up front but needs topping up far less often.
Do I need landscape fabric under rubber mulch?
Yes, lay woven landscape fabric first. It blocks weeds while letting water drain through, which keeps the mulch cleaner and the play area drier.
How many bags of rubber mulch are in a cubic yard?
About 34 bags at the standard 0.8 cubic foot bag size. This calculator converts your area and depth to both cubic yards and bag count.
Does rubber mulch get hot in the sun?
It can get warm in direct sun like most surfaces. Lighter colors stay cooler, and shade sails help on hot days.
