How to use this calculator

Enter the dividend (the number being divided) and the divisor (the number you're dividing by) — whole numbers only, up to 12 digits each. Your results update instantly as you type, so you can try different problems without pressing anything.

The worked solution shows the classic long-division layout first, then breaks every step into a table row: what you divide, what you multiply, what you subtract, and which digit gets brought down. Follow it left to right, top to bottom, and it matches the homework method exactly.

How it works

The calculator performs standard digit-by-digit long division on the dividend's digits: take the first digits that make a number at least as big as the divisor, then repeat divide → multiply → subtract → bring down until every digit has been used. The final leftover is the remainder. Because the tool works with the digits as text, even 12-digit numbers divide exactly.

Every answer is checked with quotient × divisor + remainder = dividend — if that equation didn't balance, the answer would be wrong, so the check is printed under your results. This calculator handles positive whole numbers only (no decimals, no negative numbers) with a maximum of 12 digits per number, which keeps the layout readable on any screen.

Frequently asked questions

What is long division?

Long division is a step-by-step method for dividing multi-digit numbers. You work through the dividend one digit (or group of digits) at a time, repeating four moves — divide, multiply, subtract, bring down — until every digit has been used. Whatever is left over at the end is the remainder.

How do you do long division step by step?

Repeat four steps for each digit of the dividend: 1) Divide — how many times does the divisor fit into the current working number? Write that digit on top. 2) Multiply — multiply that digit by the divisor. 3) Subtract — subtract the product from the working number. 4) Bring down — bring down the next digit of the dividend and repeat. The last subtraction leaves the remainder. Try it above and watch each step appear in the table.

What should I do with a remainder in long division?

You have three options. Leave it as a remainder (“R”) — for example, 100 ÷ 7 = 14 R 2. Write it as a fraction of the divisor, for example 14⅔. Or continue into decimals by adding a decimal point and zeros to the dividend and keeping the same four steps going. This calculator shows the remainder form.

Can this calculator do long division with decimals?

This calculator works with whole numbers only. To divide with decimals by hand, add a decimal point to the dividend followed by zeros, then keep repeating the divide-multiply-subtract-bring-down steps to get decimal digits in the quotient. If the divisor itself has decimals, first move the decimal point right in both numbers until the divisor is a whole number.

How do I check my long division answer?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add the remainder — the result must equal the original dividend. For example, 735 ÷ 6 = 122 remainder 3, and 122 × 6 + 3 = 735. This calculator prints that check line automatically under every answer, so you can verify at a glance.
