How to use this calculator
Measure your garage floor in feet. Check your epoxy kit's label for its coverage per kit (250 sq ft is typical for a 2-car kit at the recommended thickness) and enter it. The calculator sizes the base color coat, a clear topcoat at 300 sq ft per kit, and flakes at about 1 lb per 125 sq ft.
Buy everything before you start — epoxy has a limited pot life once mixed, and stopping mid-floor leaves visible seams.
How it works
Floor area = length × width. Epoxy kits = area ÷ kit coverage, rounded up. Clear topcoat kits = area ÷ 300 sq ft, rounded up. Decorative vinyl flakes are broadcast at roughly 8 lb per 1,000 sq ft (1 lb per 125 sq ft), rounded to the nearest pound.
Coverage assumes one base coat at the manufacturer's specified thickness. Porous or rough concrete drinks more material — add a kit if your slab is old and thirsty.
Frequently asked questions
How long does garage floor epoxy last?
A properly prepped two-coat epoxy floor typically lasts 5-10 years in a home garage. Hot-tire pickup is the usual failure mode when prep or cure time is rushed.
Can I apply epoxy over old paint or sealed concrete?
No. Epoxy needs bare, porous concrete to bond. Old paint, sealers, and oil stains must be removed by grinding or chemical stripping first.
What temperature can I apply epoxy at?
Most kits want 60-85°F with low humidity, and the slab should stay above 55°F for at least 72 hours of cure. Cold concrete causes poor adhesion.
Do I need one coat or two?
Two coats: a base color coat with decorative flakes broadcast into it, then a clear topcoat. The topcoat adds chemical and abrasion resistance.
How soon can I park on a new epoxy floor?
Wait a full 7 days before parking on it. Foot traffic is usually fine after 24 hours, but tires need the full cure.
