How to use this calculator

Start with your deck's length and width in feet. The calculator figures out the deck area and estimates how many ambient lights it needs, using one light for every 25 square feet as a rule of thumb.

Next, enter the number of railing posts and stair steps you have. The tool adds one post cap light per post and one step light per step, then totals everything into a complete fixture list with recommended perimeter spacing.

Finally, review the electrical side of the plan: total LED wattage, the suggested transformer size (with 25% headroom built in), and a rough kit cost so you can budget the project before you buy.

How it works

All figures below are planning estimates, not professional electrical advice. The formulas are:

  • Deck area = deck length ร— deck width (square feet).
  • Ambient / area lights = ceiling(deck area รท 25). Estimate: one light per 25 sq ft, always rounded up. A 200 sq ft deck gives exactly 8 lights.
  • Post cap lights = number of deck posts, one per post. Default estimate: posts spaced 8 ft apart, so posts = ceiling(perimeter รท 8), where perimeter = 2 ร— (length + width).
  • Stair / step lights = number of steps, one per step. Assumption: one fixture per step (simplified; wide steps may need more).
  • Total watts = total fixtures ร— 2 W. Assumption: each LED fixture draws about 2 W.
  • Suggested transformer = ceiling(total watts ร— 1.25), rounded up to the nearest standard size: 45W, 100W, 150W or 200Wโ€ฆ 300W. Assumption: 25% headroom for safety and future additions.
  • Recommended spacing = deck perimeter รท (post cap + stair lights), aiming for perimeter fixtures roughly every 6โ€“8 ft. Estimate: actual spacing should follow your railing layout.
  • Estimated kit cost = fixtures ร— $18 + transformer cost ($55 / $85 / $120 / $150 / $210 for 45W / 100W / 150W / 200W / 300W). Rough estimate only: fixture and transformer prices vary by brand and retailer.

Frequently asked questions

How many lights does my deck need?

A common rule of thumb is one ambient light for every 25 square feet of deck, rounded up. A 200 sq ft deck needs 8 ambient lights. Add one post cap light per railing post and one light per stair step on top of that, then size your transformer for the total.

How far apart should deck post cap lights be?

Space post cap lights about 6 to 8 feet apart along the railing perimeter, with one light on every post. This calculator divides your deck's perimeter by your post count to give you the recommended spacing for your layout.

Do deck lights need a transformer?

Most deck light kits run on low-voltage 12V power, so yes, you need a low-voltage transformer plugged into a standard outdoor outlet. This calculator estimates your total wattage, multiplies it by 1.25 for headroom, and rounds up to the nearest standard transformer size: 45W, 100W, 150W, 200W or 300W. All deck fixtures can share one transformer as long as the total load stays under its rating.

How many watts does each LED deck light use?

Most LED deck fixtures use about 2 watts each, so a layout of 12 fixtures draws roughly 24 watts total. This calculator uses 2 watts per fixture as its estimate for wattage, transformer sizing and cost.
