Chalk Paint Furniture Calculator

Quick answer: Chalk paint covers about 35 sq ft per quart. A 60 sq ft project with 2 coats needs roughly 3.4 quarts — buy 4.

Enter the total surface area of your furniture project and how many coats you plan, and this chalk paint calculator tells you how many quarts of paint to buy — exact quarts plus the whole quarts to put in your cart.

Estimate all visible surfaces of the piece: top, sides, front, and drawer faces.

Most furniture takes 2 coats; dark wood under light paint may need 3.

How to use this calculator

Measure the length and width of each surface you will paint — the top, each side, the front, drawer faces — and add them up in square feet. For a dresser 48 in. wide, 36 in. tall, and 18 in. deep, the visible faces come to roughly 40–50 sq ft; add a little for edges and detail.

Enter the area and your planned coats. The tool divides by the coverage figure and rounds up to whole quarts, because paint is sold by the container, not by the ounce.

How it works

Quarts = ceil(area × coats ÷ 35). The 35 sq ft/quart figure is per chalk paint manufacturer coverage data — check your brand's label, as porous or dark wood may need more.

Coverage varies by brand and application: some labels claim 60–100 sq ft per gallon (15–25 sq ft per quart), while others claim more. The 35 sq ft/quart default sits in the middle of the published range for brushed furniture paint, and rounding up to whole quarts gives you a working buffer for touch-ups.

Worked example

60 sq ft × 2 coats = 120 → 120 ÷ 35 = 3.43 quarts → buy 4 quarts.

Method & sources

The calculator multiplies total surface area by the number of coats, divides by the manufacturer coverage figure of 35 sq ft per quart, and rounds up to the next whole quart. One US quart equals about 0.95 liters. The coverage figure is an estimate — porous wood, rough texture, or spraying instead of brushing can change it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need primer with chalk paint?

Chalk paint is formulated to adhere without primer on most surfaces — follow your brand's instructions for slick or glossy pieces.

Does this include wax or sealer?

No. This estimates paint only; wax or topcoat is a separate purchase.

Why 35 square feet per quart?

That is the manufacturer coverage figure. Very porous wood can drink more paint, so treat the result as a minimum.

Quarts or liters?

The tool works in US quarts; one quart is about 0.95 liters if your paint is sold in metric sizes.
