How to use this calculator
Enter the income you want to earn in a year, how many hours per week you can realistically bill, how many weeks you work after time off, and what share of your working hours is billable. The required rate updates instantly.
If the rate looks shocking, that is the point: non-billable admin, unpaid weeks off, and low utilization all push the required rate up. Change one input at a time to see which lever moves the number most.

Frequently asked questions
What is utilization?
Utilization is billable hours divided by total hours worked. Thirty billable hours out of forty total hours is 75 percent. Admin, marketing, and training hours are not billable.
How do I pick a utilization percentage?
Track one week honestly, or enter your best estimate and adjust later. The calculator only uses the number you enter โ it does not assume one for you.
Does this include taxes and business expenses?
No. The rate is before income tax and before business expenses. Add your expected tax bill and overhead on top when you plan your actual take-home pay.
Why do working weeks matter?
A year has 52 weeks minus vacations, holidays, and sick time. Entering 48 working weeks instead of 52 raises your required rate โ unpaid time off has to be paid for by your billable hours.
