Bike Rack Capacity Calculator

Not sure how many bikes fit on a bike rack? This free calculator checks your bike count and total weight against typical rack capacity limits for trunk-mount, hitch-mount, roof-mount, and truck-bed racks — and tells you whether your setup fits or needs an upgrade.

How to use this calculator

Choose the rack type you have (or are considering), enter how many bikes you want to carry, and type the average weight per bike. Standard bikes average about 30 lb; if you ride e-bikes, tick the e-bike box and the calculator uses 60 lb per bike.

If you selected a hitch rack, pick your hitch class so the calculator can run a tongue-weight check. The results update instantly as you change any input — no need to press Calculate more than once.

The verdict tells you whether your bikes fit within the rack's rated bike count and weight limit, and it recommends the rack type that best matches your bike count. If either check fails, the tool suggests what to upgrade.

How it works

The calculator compares your setup against typical manufacturer ratings for each rack style. These are common, representative specs — actual limits vary by brand, so always confirm with your rack's manual before loading up:

Rack typeMax bikesWeight limit
Trunk-mount3 bikes100 lb
Hitch-mount (hanging)4 bikes150 lb
Hitch-mount (platform)4 bikes200 lb
Roof-mount1 bike per crossbar mount (typically 2–4)75 lb per mount
Truck bed pad6 bikes250 lb

The math is simple: total bike weight is bikes × average weight, and the rack passes if your bike count is at or under the max and your total weight is at or under the limit. For hitch racks, a tongue-weight check adds the rack's own weight (an estimate) to the bikes and compares the total to a simplified hitch limit: 200 lb for Class II and 500 lb for Class III. As a rule of thumb, a 4-bike platform hitch rack is the standard recommendation for carrying 4 bikes.

Frequently asked questions

How many bikes can a hitch rack hold?

Most hitch racks hold 2 to 4 bikes. Hanging-style hitch racks are typically rated for 4 bikes up to 150 lb total, while platform-style hitch racks usually hold 4 bikes up to 200 lb total. Always check your specific rack's manual, since ratings vary by brand.

Can I put an e-bike on a trunk rack?

Usually not. Trunk-mounted racks are typically rated for about 100 lb total, and a single e-bike can weigh 50 to 70 lb or more. E-bikes are best carried on a platform-style hitch rack rated for heavier loads, on a Class II or III hitch.

Do I need a bigger hitch for a bike rack?

It depends on total weight. A common rule is that the loaded rack should stay within about 10% of your hitch's tongue-weight rating. A 4-bike platform rack can weigh 170 to 250 lb loaded, which exceeds a small Class I hitch, so Class II or III is the safer choice for 3 or more bikes.

Is a roof rack or a hitch rack better for bikes?

Hitch racks are easier to load, hold more weight, and keep bikes lower for better aerodynamics. Roof racks free up rear access and work when you have no hitch, but each crossbar mount carries only one bike (typically 75 lb per mount), lifting bikes overhead is harder, and you must remember garage clearance.
