Barbell Warm-Up Set Calculator
Quick answer: Each warm-up set = working weight × set percentage, rounded to the nearest plate increment (halves up). Plates per side = (set weight − bar weight) ÷ 2, matched to standard plates. For a 225-lb working weight with a 45-lb bar at 50/70/85%: 115 lb (25 + 10 per side, 8 reps), 160 lb (45 + 10 + 2.5 per side, 5 reps), 190 lb (45 + 25 + 2.5 per side, 3 reps).
Stop guessing your warm-up loads. Enter your working weight and bar weight, tune the percentage scheme and reps, and this barbell warm-up set calculator gives you exact set weights plus the plates to load on each side.

How to use this calculator
Enter your working weight (the heaviest set of the session) and select your bar. Tune the three warm-up sets — each percentage of your working weight with its rep count — and choose how set weights round. Everything updates instantly: set weights, reps, and the exact plates per side.
How it works
Set weight = working weight × set percentage, rounded to the nearest rounding increment with exact halves rounded up. Plates per side = (set weight − bar weight) ÷ 2, matched greedily against standard plate sizes. The 50/70/85% × 8/5/3 default is an editable starting point, not a prescribed program.
Worked example
Working weight 225 lb, 45-lb bar, default scheme, round to 5 lb: set 1 = 225 × 50% = 112.5 → 115 lb — 35 lb per side = 25 + 10 (8 reps); set 2 = 225 × 70% = 157.5 → 160 lb — 57.5 lb per side = 45 + 10 + 2.5 (5 reps); set 3 = 225 × 85% = 191.25 → 190 lb — 72.5 lb per side = 45 + 25 + 2.5 (3 reps).

Method & sources
Method: set weight = round(working × pct, nearest increment, halves up); plates per side = (set weight − bar) ÷ 2 matched greedily to standard plates. All scheme values are user-editable calculator defaults; no external authoritative figures are used.

Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate barbell warm-up weights?
Multiply your working weight by each set's percentage, then round to the nearest loadable plate increment. For example, 50% of 225 lb is 112.5 lb, which rounds to 115 lb — a 45-lb bar plus a 25 and a 10 on each side.
Why does the calculator default to 50/70/85 percent?
50/70/85% with 8/5/3 reps is the calculator's editable default scheme — a starting point you can change, not a rule. Edit any percentage or rep count to match your own warm-up plan.
What does 'round to 5 lb' mean?
Each set weight is rounded to the nearest 5 lb (or 2.5 or 1 lb, your choice) so it can actually be loaded with standard plates. Exact halves round up, so 112.5 lb becomes 115 lb.
How are plates per side calculated?
The bar weight is subtracted from the set weight, the remainder is split in half, and that per-side weight is matched with standard plates: 45, 25, 10, 5, and 2.5 lb (or 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, and 1.25 kg in kg mode).
Can I use kilograms?
Yes — toggle the lb/kg switch. Enter your working weight in kilograms and the calculator rounds set weights and picks plates using standard kg plate sizes.
